![]() This has another bad side effect for the teachers - since the teacher gets their remaining schedule spots filled with beginning piano students, they will have no openings if a student comes looking for their actual instrument specialty. This is completely unfair to put this pressure on the teachers, and its FALSE ADVERTISING to the parents and students who are paying good money for an experienced piano teacher and they don't even know that they are not getting one. I have had new teachers coming to me in a panic because they have no idea what books to use or what to do. These teachers have not been given any help or instruction from the owner on how to even teach piano. There have been many cases over the years where the teacher has little or NO experience with teaching or even playing piano, and they are thrust into a schedule with lots of new piano students. My biggest complaint is that many teachers who specialize in instruments that aren't as common (like cello, brass, or wind instruments), they are expected to fill openings in their schedule with beginning piano students. ![]() RMA does not have the resources to remind people how many makeup lessons they have to complete, and they really don't care about doing that because they get the money for the missed lessons regardless. If they don't make up the lesson, RMA pockets the money, and the teacher loses out on any compensation for their time lost. The makeup lesson policy basically benefits RMA - if a student cancels a lesson ahead of time, they have a year to make up the lesson. Otherwise no extras, no paid breaks, no holiday compensation, no paid vacation days. Sick pay and a state run retirement program are the only benefits, since they are both now required by CA law. This leads to a lot of burnout, there's been a high turnover of new teachers the past several years. Many teachers work full afternoon/evening schedules up to 6 days per week, and the owner prefers teachers to work as many days as possible. Students are scheduled so tightly that the teachers have very little time to discuss anything with parents. Schedule is back-to-back lessons, long days with NO paid breaks. They are pretty much always hiring new teachers since there is a high turnover rate. ![]() All employees truly care about the students and doing their best.Īs a teacher, you will likely enter in to a full teaching schedule, as long as you are willing to teach beginning piano students (even if piano is not your primary instrument). Talented and experienced musicians/teachers, and fantastic office staff. NO VACATION, NO HEALTH INSURANCE even if you work more than 32 hours a week. Since I left that Academy after years I feel better and happy working in other music academy near by which they are at least professional and not abusive! They made me refill the 5 gallon water and put in the dispenser in my free time without compensation which caused backache.īecause of this tough situation the instructors leave very quick and a few stay but none are happy to be there! The owner literally asked me many times to give ride to other teachers to the bart station which made my trip 10 minutes longer going back to home without any compensation. They abuse poor musicians to become richer. I do think the company is very abusive and they have no principles. There was only one bathroom in the entire Academy which sometimes I had to stay In the line instead of teaching and that made the student's parents complain but I had to use the bathroom! With more that 12 rooms and 12 instructors teaching at the same time there was no kitchen in the whole Academy! Teachers had to eat outside or in their room which makes the rooms stink. This is not fare for the instructor to sit in the class and not get paid while the student already paid. If a student cancel the class They charge the student and take all the money for themselves if that student don't schedule the make up class. They take advantage of instructors and use them as full time while hire them as part time. I have worked at this place for years now but I see the owner very selfish and greedy.
